Braeswood Wheelchair Access Bathroom
The Challenge
The homeowners are an older couple who live in Braeswood, Houston. Their home was built in the 1950s and needed to be renovated to better suit the couples’ lives. The husband required a wheelchair to move around and there was very little space to maneuver.
To use the sink, shower, and toilet, he needed to travel through a closet in addition to physical assistance to reach them.
The Plan
From our initial visit, we realized that we needed to create more hallway space to allow for 360 degree turns in addition to remodeling their primary bathroom (existing bedroom #1).
To accomplish this, we pushed a few walls and reduced a few closets. Then for easier access to the master bathroom, we moved the sink and toilet to create a doorway.
It was evident to switch existing plumbing fixtures to allow space for wheelchair, grab bars, and personnel assistance.
Our plan was to remove every barrier to entry while updating the home to a modern look.
